2008 Chapter News

December Officer Installation and Christmas Party
Members met at Luby's for the Christmas Party with Chinese gift exchange and the installation of new officers.  District Representative David Doss installed the officers for 2009 and also walked away as winner of the  basket of presents in the raffle drawing.

November Meeting
President Dave Bloomer reported on the October Chapter Event at the Rosenberg Opry and recent events of the Houston Association of Chapters.  Members approved continuing membership in the Association for 2009.  Members also approved a resolution to be presented to the Texas Federation of Chapters Convention urging a change in the NARFE Bylaws to allow recognition of Councils.  The fact that there are several events coming up was reported:  NARFE Legislative Conference in early March, District Conference third week in March, TFC Convention in April and the Region VI Training Seminar in September. Our District Representative and Area Vice President will be invited to attend our party and Installation of Officers.

Members considered plans for our Christmas Party and Installation of Officers.  In view of the $20 lunch buffet bid by the Country Club members decided to hold the party at Luby's with individuals choosing their own meal and paying for it.  Members will bring a small gift for the raffle and a gift with approximate value of $10 for a person of thier same gender for the chinese gift exchange.

October Meeting
President Dave Bloomer briefed the members on the National Convention recently held in Louisville Kentucky.
Plans were made for the Chapter Event to be at the Rosenberg Opry on October 17th.   Congressman Nick Lampson attended our Meet Your Candidate event and spoke to the members.

September Meeting

The September meeting was cancelled due to conflict with the NARFE National Convention being held the same week.

August Meeting
A speaker from the state talked about avoiding fraud.  The members voted not to have a meeting in September due to the NARFE National Convention conflicting with our meeting date.  Members were invited to participate in Chapter 828's Summer Social which will feature Congressman Gene Green and honor a member for his 100th birthday in August.

July Meeting
President Dave Bloomer reported information about the 2009 Texas Federation Convention was now available on the TFC Website at http://www.txnarfe.org/TFCconv.html   Members were advised to make hotel reservations early.  Dave also covered several resolutions to be considered at the National Convention.  Members also discussed Meet Your Candidates options and possible events for the Chapter Event in October.  Members chose to wait till August to make a decision on whether to hold a meeting in September.  Some members will be in Louisville, KY for the NARFE National Convention at that time.  The meal chosen for the next meeting will be fried chicken with salad, vegetable, coffee or tea, tax and tip included the cost will be $13.00.

June Meeting
Arrangements were made for submission by the Treasurer of the chapter list of delegates, and their registration forms to attend the National Convention in September.  Dave Bloomer and Hazel Hicks will be our Delegates.
President Dave Bloomer explained the current status of two resolutions submitted by Chapter 2030 that will be considered at the National Convention.  The resolutions can be viewed on the national website in the National Convention section of the webpage.  A brief presentation on the history of Father's Day was presented and members were given red roses for living fathers and white roses in memory of deceased fathers.   The meal chosen for the next meeting is Gulf grilled shrimp. The meal with tea or coffee, tax and tip will cost $12.00. 

May Meeting
Information on the NARFE National Convention in Louisville, Kentucky was presented.  Members elected Dave Bloomer and Hazel Hicks as delegates to the  National Convention to be held September 7th-12th.  Dave Bloomer will serve as voting delegate.  Anyone interested in attending should contact President Dave Bloomer as soon as possible so they can be listed as an alternate delegate to the convention.  Hazel Hicks presented a brief program on Mother's Day and presented red or white roses to members depending on whether their mother was  deceased or not.
 

April Meeting
Nicholas Williams Field Director for Congressman Lampson's Office presented information on the Economic Stimulus Legislation as well as Congressman Lampson's proposed tax reductions at the April meeting.  Two members who had not previously attended meetings were present for the Special Newcomer Day and each was presented with a gift, a roster, a Form 100 booklet and information brochures to help them learn what NARFE does for its members.  The meal chosen for our next meeting is Fried Catfish with vegetables, tea or coffee the cost will be $13.33 tax and tip included.   James Bain won the raffle.


March Meeting
Nancy Brown of Helping Hands presented a talk on the work of Helping Hands and how they had progressed to the point that they are having a building completed for them on city land.  Members also heard a report about the District 7 Convention.  Members voted to send a donation to Helping Hands and approved another motion to renew the Chapter liability insurance.  Discussion indicated a need to have a Chair for the Garage Sale.  The meal selected for the next meeting was chicken fried steak with a price of #12.01 tax and tip included.

February Meeting
The Texas Lovin Cloggers brought us an update on the Rodeo, gave a wonderful dance performance and answered questions about Clogging.  Al Luna reported further details on transfer of the Treasury and members voted to approve transfer of our chapter account to  NARFE  Premier Federal Credit Union   Members reviewed options and decided to continue at the  present meeting location for now and order off the menu.  At each meeting a decision will be made on the meal for the next meeting .  The price will be provided and will include a drink (coffee or tea)  tax and tip.  The amount will be announced to members in meeting reminders by phone and by email.  If a menu is not set the club will plan on their special for that day for the average attendance we have and the price of that meal will be provided in meeting announcements.  Members signed up to attend the District 7 meeting March 5th at Ryan's at 7211 Hwy 6 South (just south of Bellaire and Hwy  6)  The next meeting for Chapter 2030 will be on Wednesday March 12th. 

January Meeting
President Dave Bloomer thanked Elizabeth Freund, Wilda Simms, Hazel Hicks and others who helped with the Christmas party.  Steve Thomas from AARP Income Tax Assistance explained services available and provided a table of places where service could be obtained. Al and Frances Luna reported to the Chapter on banking services available from NARFE Credit Union.  After discussion it was decided to defer action until a larger attendance of members and further information on cost of checks.   A booster sign up sheet for the National Convention was initiated and will be available at meetings in the next few months for members to contribute to our listing in the Convention Booklet.  Members were advised the District Convention would be March 5th at Chapter 1375's meeting place (Ryan's on Hwy 6) in Sugar Land.  It was also decided we would still have our March 12th meeting as usual.  Dave also announced he was appointing as our representatives to the Houston Association of Chapters, Al Luna and Hester Bain.  Alternates appointed are Phil Miller, Hazel Hicks, and Dave Bloomer.  Frances Luna took notes for the minutes as Hazel Hicks was ill.
